UFC Unveils New ‘Code Of Conduct Policy’ In Wake Of Matt Mitrione-Fallon Fox Transgender Kerfuffle

The UFC has unscrolled a new ‘Code of Conduct Policy’ as a result of comments made by heavyweight Matt Mitrione toward transgender MMA fighter Fallon Fox. We told you about this in Tuesday’s roundup, but the aftershocks of Mitrione’s wild, politically unsavory rant are continuing to be felt: including a response by Fox.

Our story so far: Mitrione (pictured … form an orderly line, ladies) denounced in no uncertain terms the existence of fellow MMA competitor Fox, who at one time was a man but now is not. Transgender fighters are not Mitrione’s cup of bitter brew, as he related in an unhinged spiel on MMAFighting.com’s “The MMA Hour” show on Monday. Fox responded last night, but first, an excerpt from Mitrione’s verbal manifesto:

“That is a lying, sick, sociopathic, disgusting freak,” Mitrione said of Fox. “And I mean that. Because you lied on your license to beat up women. That’s disgusting. The woman that’s fighting him, props to you. I hope you beat his ass, and I hope he gets blackballed and never fights again, because that’s disgusting and I’m appalled by that.”

He went on to say: “Six years of taking performance de-hancing drugs, you think is going to change all that? That’s ridiculous.” Which is the first time I’ve heard the term “performance de-hancing”. That could be applied to many things, among them Tim Lincecum’s recent haircut.

Now Fox has responded, and in a devastating blow to Mitrione, she decided to be nice, articulate and even-tempered. That’s just dirty pool. Fox:

“Matt Mitrione went well beyond disagreeing with the medical experts who say I should be able to compete as a woman, and personally attacked me as a fighter, as a woman, and as a human being.

“His comments do not reflect the spirit of our sport, where most competitors uphold values like respect and dignity.”

Then today UFC president Dana White released the UFC Code of Conduct Policy, which was announced back in July, but without details. Now we have the actual wording. The five-page document begins with:

“Fighters shall conduct themselves in accordance with commonly accepted standards of decency, social convention, and morals, and fighters will not commit any act or become involved in any situation or occurrence or make any statement which will reflect negatively upon or bring disrepute, contempt, scandal, ridicule or disdain to the fighter or the UFC.”

Mitrione was suspended by the UFC as his contract is “being reviewed.” He of course played defensive tackle for the New York Giants and Minnesota Vikings before embarking on his MMA career. He also played football at Purdue.

But my favorite Mitrione fun fact is this: he was involved in a Toronto-area anti-bullying campaign earlier this year.
