Goal-Line Technology In The Tour de France: Today’s Finish Was A Corker

So what’s the margin of victory here? The width of a ball bearing? I don’t think I could fit a two-page pamphlet into the difference. Without the drugs (or at least with much fewer of them), this Tour de France is kind of exciting. Matteo Trentin edged Peter Sagan at the finish to win Stage 7 this morning — a result that had to be conformed by photo finish camera.

And our winner is confirmed (angrily tears up ticket, heads to racetrack bar).

Remember folks, technology is our friend (I’m talking to you, soccer and baseball).

As for the leading American:

Almost immediately afterwards the American Tejay van Garderen, who at 2min 11sec down on general classification was in striking distance of the yellow jersey, was involved in a big crash. Despite pushing desperately hard to make up the time, he lost 1:03 on the stage.

Tour de Notes:

* A women’s Tour de France? Wot?

* Oh you hate to see that.

* I prefer my poultry jersey-free.

* … and my mutton not yellow.

* How to watch:

Tour de France Live will have live video of the entire race, while allowing viewers to pause, rewind, and re-watch in slow motion. It will offer analysis, live GPS, and the ability to follow individual riders. NBC Sports is selling single-day web access for $4.99, with the entire tour (it ends July 27) available for $29.99. Android and iPhone apps cost $14.99.
