Why Did ESPN Censor Bill Simmons’ Joke About Dwayne Wade Going To Germany?

bill simmonsIn a most perplexing bit of censorship, the Worldwide Leader In Sports edited out a joke that relatively-new TV analyst Bill Simmons made last night, regarding Dwayne Wade “having” platelet-rich plasma therapy in Germany. The joke made it on the air in the live broadcast, but was omitted later on.

The “joke,” if you want to call it that: when discussing Wade’s awesome performance last night and whether he can rest up in time for Game 5, Simmons said: “He can go to Germany again.”

WOW OMG HOW COULD HE HAVE SAID THAT, THAT’S SO HORRIBLE. WHY WOULD HE REFERENCE SOMETHING THAT WE KNOW OTHER ELITE ATHLETES (Kobe Bryant, Alex Rodriguez) HAVE DONE, THAT’S INSANE!!!

Obviously, that is not insane. Biologic medicine (which PRP therapy falls under) is said to be “controversial,” mostly because the FDA here in America isn’t so keen on it. But that doesn’t mean it’s not real.

I don’t think Dwayne Wade has actually gone to Germany for said therapy, but seeing Dwayne Wade move the way he sporadically does (e.g., well) inspires people to make that joke. Just not on live TV.

Simmons didn’t take kindly to being edited for something so benign:

And then:

First of all, shame on Simmons for not knowing that working for ESPN television wouldn’t be like hanging with the bros over at TNT, ripping on fat chicks and stuff. It’s owned by ABC-Disney. You’re not going to change the culture yourself, Sports Guy.

But shame on ESPN for making a big deal out of essentially nothing. It was a useless edit — once the joke had aired, it was out in the Internet-verse forever — and it was such a throwaway line it wasn’t worth pissing off a long-time employee. By the way, according to this recent B.S. Report, he’s kinda worried about you anyway (skip to the 37-minute mark).

ESPN, if I’m missing the point here, please let me know. Otherwise, you just look dumb.
