What’s On TV Tonight, And How Not To Lose Your Money Gamblin’
Welcome to SportsGrid’s new, daily feature, where we tell you what sports are on TV tonight. Then, I do my best to help you win some money while watching. You know, if you’re into that sort of thing, and gambling is legal in your jurisdiction. Feel free to tweet hateful things at me if my advice moves you to do so. TV games are often the toughest games to find an edge on, so don’t go crazy, people. If I do recommend a bet, I’ll keep track of it, so you can tell me how awful (or wonderful?) I am. For record-keeping, we’ll assume a standard bet is $10. Occasionally, there will be 2x or 3x bets, maybe 4 or 5 if I’m feeling spunky. Good luck, America!
Soccer: Manchester United at Real Madrid (8:00 p.m., FSN)
I really like the draw here, you guys. Gus Johnson is announcing an important soccer match on your television.
DRAW, YOUR ENTIRE BANK ACCOUNT TO WIN LOT$
College Basketball: Syracuse (-4) at UConn (7:00 p.m., ESPN)
You could’ve had this at -2 when it opened, but -4 still looks good. Road, ranked favorites are often trouble, but ‘Cuse is as good as the rankings suggest. They’re 11-6 ATS, and have met or exceeded expectations all year. The loss to Pitt was a “shocking upset” to some, but in reality, Pitt is the No. 4-ranked team in KenPom, and the game was at Pitt. They’ve had two really bad games all year.
UConn is a decent enough team, but they haven’t played anyone at home. They beat Michigan State to open the season, but that means nothing now. I don’t think they can match up with an elite team, even at home. ‘Cuse should dominate the glass.
Syracuse -4 (-101), $10 to win $9.90
College Basketball: UNC at Duke (-11) (9:00 p.m., ESPN)
It’s UNC-Duke. You know both teams will come to play. Duke is significantly better; KenPom says this number should be 15. But are you willing to bet UNC loses its biggest game of the year by double-digits?
I’m not, but I’m also not willing to bet against one of the best teams in the country, coming off a loss, in a rivalry game against an inferior opponent. Duke just beat NC State, the class of NC, by 13. I don’t see any reason to bet this game.
PASS, YOU CRAZY DEGENERATE
NBA: Bulls at Celtics (-2.5) (7:30 p.m., NBATV)
This opened as a PK, and now I’m a bit intrigued by the Bulls. We all know the Celtics are somehow playing out of their heads without Rondo; can they keep it up? Then again, the loss to the Bobcats doesn’t mean anything; it was a road game for an old team coming off a fast-paced, OT win.
Boston has covered in four of their last five — seriously, when is this going to let up?
Ok, I seriously have no idea who’s going to win 90% of NBA games.
PASS, YOU CRAZY DEGENERATE
NHL: Blues (+103) at Red Wings (-113) (7:30 p.m., NBCSN)
Ah, hockey, a sport that occasionally makes sense!
The Blues are widely regarded as a Cup contender, but they’ve been a bottom-tier team so far. And Detroit started slow, but has actually been really good. St. Louis is starting its third-string goalie, while Detroit has starter Jimmy Howard in net.
This could be the game the Blues turn it around, but this value, on a team that went 31-7-3 at home last year, is absurd.
Red Wings ML -113, $40 to win $35.40
NBA: Rockets at Clippers (-10.5) (10:30 p.m., NBATV)
James Harden is out. Is it worth a flier to take the Rockets, thinking this is an overadjustment? Possibly, since this line is steep. But instead of betting on the NBA, you could just buy a scratch-off ticket. At least you won’t wait long for your loss.
Pass, lean Rockets
Record in games actually worth risking money on: 26-17 (+$103.53)
What else is on: College Basketball: Miami at Florida State (7:00 p.m., ESPN2); West Virginia at Baylor (9:00 p.m., ESPN2) and Oregon at Washington (11:00 p.m., ESPN2)
