Northern Ireland Still On Top Of Golf World As Darren Clarke Wins British Open
Rory McIlroy wasn’t able to recreate the magic that he made at last month’s U.S. Open, but for the second straight month a golfer from Northern Ireland is walking away with a major title, as today Darren Clarke won this year’s British Open.
At 42-years-old, Clarke is twice McIlroy’s age, and this weekend’s win gives him his first major title. After scoring a -5 for the weekend, Clarke beat out Phil Mickelson and Dustin Johnson, who tied for second at -2.
McIlroy, who just weeks ago was being billed as the next Tiger Woods thanks to his dominating performance in the U.S. Open, finished tied for 25th at +7.
While the story of a 42-year-old who hasn’t seriously contended for a major in nearly a decade finally winning one is certainly uplifting, it mostly just makes us yearn for the days of Tiger’s dominance so that golf can be exciting again.
