Reactions To Tiger’s Terrible Day, As Told Through The Five Stages Of Grief

Tiger Woods‘ day at the PGA Championship can best be summed up by this quote from TNT’s Ernie Johnson: “We requested an interview with Tiger Woods … he declined.”

After a promising start, the embattled golfer — recently returned to the PGA tour after a three-month hiatusshot a disastrous 7-over 77, his worst round ever at the PGA Championship and his worst first round as a pro. He might not even make the cut.

Woods is now in danger of seeing his PGA Tour season come to an end Friday. Woods has never missed the cut in 13 previous PGA Championships, but if he fails to finish among the top 70 and ties, he’ll be headed home for the weekend.

Naturally, everyone watching Tiger crash and burn before their eyes had a reaction, with some even comparing the golfer’s downward spiral to a Shakespearean tragedy.

Here’s just a sample of those reactions, consistent with the five stages of grief:

1. Denial

2. Anger

…and just for good measure, Snark:

3. Bargaining

4. Depression

5. Acceptance

This could very well be the last time the Nicolas Cage of golf is seen on the PGA tour (and subsequently invades the Twittersphere) for the rest of the year, as Woods is currently 129th in FedEx Cup points. He must be among the top 125 through next week’s Wyndham Championship in order to advance to the first of four playoff events in two weeks. However, Woods has said he will be missing next week’s tournament due to family obligations, and has never played in any of the remaining four Fall Series events.
