Look Out: Rory McIlroy’s Shot Hits Spectator In Head
Rory McIlroy got off to a solid start at The Open Championship today, posting a 3-under 67 that left him three shots back of leader Adam Scott (and tied with Tiger Woods). But just as McIlroy is within striking distance of the lead, spectators are within striking distance too… specifically, striking distance of errant tee shots.
And if there’s one thing the perpetually-dreary, gray, windy, marshlike-rough-laden Open Championship is good for, it’s an errant tee shot here and there. McIlroy hit one on the 15th hole… and that was bad news for someone just beyond the ropes a few hundred or so yards away. Suffice to say, the shot really hit the fan:
Well, in the end it wasn’t the worst thing in the world, since the guy, though clearly in some pain after getting struck, looked okay, and got a signed glove from McIlroy on top of that. Plus, that’s a hell of a story to be able to tell people, especially if McIlroy winds up winning a bunch more majors – and there’s no reason to think he won’t. No, if you want a worst-case “getting hit by a flying golf ball” scenario, you’ll still have to visit the fictional realm.
