Abby Wambach And Hope Solo Kicked Soccer Balls At Cabs On Letterman Last Night
The U.S. women’s national soccer team couldn’t quite bring home the World Cup, but they were still in demand upon arriving home thanks to the interest they generated during the tournament. This resulted in a host of television appearances for some of the team’s stars, and last night, forward Abby Wambach and goalkeeper Hope Solo made perhaps the most prominent of those appearances and stopped by Late Show with David Letterman. The two talked about the experience of playing in Germany, of coming so close to living the dream…oh, and they also kicked soccer balls at taxi cabs.
The interview was about what you’d expect, save for one story from Solo that struck us as a bit remarkable. Solo said she’s not one for communicating with any upcoming opponent before a match, but was surprised to find an e-mail from Aya Miyama, a friend of hers on Japan’s national team, sitting in her inbox, and couldn’t help but respond and urge the both of them to enjoy the moment. Then, after Japan won and Solo saw Miyama, the latter wasn’t even celebrating because she knew how much it hurt to be on the losing end. That’s such incredible sportsmanship, it’s almost alarming.
And then…they tried to kick soccer balls through the open doors of cabs driving by the outside of the Ed Sullivan Theater. Do not question Hope Solo’s ability to shoot the ball. Video below – if you’re most interested in the cab shootout, it starts at the 2:48 mark.
