Remember when the betting options for PGA events were to take Tiger Woods, or to take the field? Well, those days are back again. Kinda.
For the British open, ESPN3 (The Tres!) will offer feed of just Tiger Woods throughout the whole tournament. It will be hosted by Trey Wingo, and include commentary from Tom Weiskopf and David Duval. For those of you scoring at home, the third ESPN channel will follow one golfer with three people talking about it.
Why would the World Wide Leader think viewers would want more time with a Tiger than Pi? Well, even though we say we hate dynasties like the Yankees, the Steelers and Duke Basketball, we don’t tend to watch those sports if the favorite is not involved. And the PGA is no different. When Tiger isn’t in the field or gets eliminated before the weekend, viewership tails off (yes, that was a Tiger pun). So ESPN wants to make sure you get your fill of Eldrick and his caddy, Joe. So wait, what if Tiger doesn’t make the cut? ESPN3 says they will follow other golfers in depth, a move that has “temporary restraining order” written all over it.
For a guy who apparently spend the better part of his time in the public eye trying to hide his activities, its odd that he would submit to this much, um, exposure. Think about it. While other golfers are hitting off the tee, we’ll see Tiger tying his shoes and texting his agent. When someone hits a drive 500 yards, we’ll be outside the bathroom waiting for Tiger to freshen up. While a golfer is lining up for an eagle putt, we’ll be with Tiger, replacing a divot. We’ll see everything Tiger does for four entire days. OH MY GOD! I’M GETTING BORED JUST WRITING ABOUT IT! I hope ESPN knows what they’re doing.
There’s no word if the network will be using drones in their coverage (besides the ones behind the microphone, of course).
