WATCH: Andres Iniesta’s Late Goal Gives Spain 1-0 Win And World Cup Title


It was a long wait for the first goal of the World Cup final, but for Spain, it was worth it. Andres Iniesta put one in in the 116th minute – when the game was on the verge of heading to a decisive shootout – and gave Spain a 1-0 win for its first World Cup title.

Spain possessed the ball for 64% of the match but was unable to break through until the very end. Luckily for the Spaniards, it was enough, as the Netherlands failed to connect on its four shots on goal.

But even though commentator Alexi Lalas called the missed-opportunity-filled contest “a pig of a game,” Spain will take it. Their triumph represents a remarkable tournament turnaround, after losing their first game 1-0 to Switzerland.

But as an old sports cliche goes, it’s about how you finish. When they needed to, Spain put one in the net, and they’re the deserving champions. Video of Iniesta’s dramatic score below:
