Andy Murray’s Latest Reason To Look Miserable: His Mom Openly Ogling Rivals

Andy Murray’s tennis matches are exercises in horrendous body language. First off, there’s the fact that despite his superb talent (ranked No. 4 in the world, reached three major finals), there’s a herky-jerky style to his movement on the court that places him in stark contrast to, say, Roger Federer, who might as well have a backing chrous of angels for every shot he hits.

And then there’s the fact that Murray always – alwayslooks upset. Sometimes it’s hard to tell whether he won or lost a point. He wears a semi-permanent scowl, and a look of resigned disgust after every mistake (in a game where mistakes, and lots of them, are all but inevitable even when you’re playing well). I’m not entirely convinced this “smile” isn’t some sort of camera trick. You get the idea.

Anyway, now that you know how Murray usually appears to be feeling, how would you imagine he would feel about his mother, Judy, tweeting about how dreamy she finds Feliciano Lopez, one of Murray’s tennis compatriots? Answer: about how you’d think he would.

The Scot, known as much for his dour demeanour (ed. note: told you.) as his strong defensive game, was not amused.

“I think it’s about time she stopped that nonsense. Makes me want to throw up. It’s disgusting,” said Murray, who could meet Lopez in the quarter-finals.

And truth be told, I can’t much blame Murray for this one. If my mom were out there tweeting about how hot some other blogger was…yeah, I’d feel weird about it, and I might say something along similar lines in the hypothetical situation that any reporters cared enough to ask me my opinion about it (which they wouldn’t).

And yet still…this is classic Andy Murray. He doesn’t just say he feels weird about his mom tweeting this stuff – he demolishes her. “Nonsense.” “Throw up.” “Disgusting.” This isn’t just displeasure…this is extreme displeasure. But there is a lighter side to the guy:

“I was practicing with [Lopez] before the tournament and my mum was on the side. I shouted across the net, I said, ‘Feli, if we sit down for a drink, could you take a picture with my mum, because she thinks you’re beautiful?’

“She went bright red. Refused to take the picture. Quite funny. Not like her.”

I bet he thought it was funny…and I also bet no could tell.
