“Are Female Surfers Too Sexy?” Wonders The Sunday Mail

Female surfing is getting better. The sport is being infused with young talent, and most people would agree that the quality of competition has improved dramatically in the last few years. But its athletes are also getting prettier, which means it’s time for everyone to be thrown into a philosophical funk about what it all means.

The “Kournikovacation” of the sport is the topic in today’s Sunday Mail, where it’s wondered aloud if growing Google searches and shrinking swimsuits are having a detrimental affect on the sport.

As magazines rate “the 10 hottest female surfing stars”, blokey bloggers even speculate that some of the teenagers have shot up in the ratings as their bikinis get smaller.

Throw in the obligatory drooling idiots, and whammo, you’ve got something cooking.

Jamie Mather, 19, said he thought women’s surfing had become prettier in all sorts of ways. “They’re surfing a lot more powerfully and with style. A few years ago they were ugly and weak. You could tell they were a female surfer,” he said.

Yes, that last quote was unsightly. But it will take more than a 19-year-old saying stupid things to convince me that a sport will suddenly collapse in on itself because its participants have gotten easier on the eyes. No kind of competition survives if it’s not competitive, and the same holds true for women’s surfing: no one wants to see people falling off their boards, even if they’re cute.

Seriously why would you watch a womans sport if there weren’t a few hotties out there?

I have to say that I wasn’t familiar with the current crop of female surfers until I ran a Google search on some of the names mentioned in the linked article. My feeling is that the sport could use a little attention and if this is the way they can get it, I see nothing wrong with the proposition.

C’mon! You’re probably so hung up on looks that wouldn’t even have watched the 250 pound “babes” from the old Soviet Union when they setting shot put records.

I don’t think there was anything wrong with that context-free quote, the individual was obviously talking about the aesthetics of the surfers’ style in the water, not their physical appearance. Give males the benefit of the doubt here!

I cant think of a single womens sport that I would want to watch unless mud wrestling counts. Perhaps if the brazilian ladies football team looked like they had wandered off the catwalk onto the pitch and amazingly could also play the sport might attract some viewers of both sexes.
