Bill Cosby’s Congratulatory Message For Olympic Decathlon Champ Ashton Eaton Is The Most Bill Cosby Thing Ever

Bill Cosby was a pretty good track and field athlete back in the day, competing at both the high school and collegiate levels and also recording some stand-up bits based on his experience in the sport. So it makes sense that he’d be aware of the exploits of Ashton Eaton, the American decathlete who just won a gold medal in London and holds the world record in the event. Cosby released this video address to Eaton shortly before the Games began, and when Eaton brought hom the gold, Cosby congratulated him like so:

Nah, just kidding, that wasn’t it. But damn if that wasn’t the most dead-on accurate Cosby parody anyone’s ever done. It’s like they just took an exact Kids Say the Darndest Things bit and Simpsonized it. Anyone who doubts the idea that the imagined can seem more real than reality itself ought to watch that clip and see if it doesn’t change their mind just a bit. And that’s illustrated further by Cosby’s actual post-Olympics message to Eaton:

The trademark delivery. Some funny faces. The deliberately absurd premise of Eaton being inspired to greatness by the prospect of beating Cosby’s personal bests. It’s trademark Bill Cosby all the way… and it’s still not as Cosby-like as that Simpsons clip. So we’re just left to wonder what the congrats to Eaton would have looked like if John Swartzwelder wrote it instead.
