Bob Costas Says Screw The IOC, I’m Having My Own Moment Of Silence For The Munich Massacre

The Israeli Olympic team was denied its request from the International Olympic Committee to recognize to the 40th anniversary of the Munich Massacre with a moment of silence when the Olympics open later this week. But even though the IOC won’t officially recognize the anniversary of the tragedy when the Games open, acclaimed journalist Bob Costas said he will.

During the 1972 Summer Olympics in Munich, 11 members of the Israeli Olympic team were murdered by a Palestinian extremist group. This summer marks the 40th anniversary of that tragedy.

Costas, who will be on air for NBC for the opening ceremonies this Friday, said he plans to publicly take a stand against the IOC’s decision by asking for his own moment of silence when the Israeli team enters Olympic Stadium, with tens of millions of viewers expected to be tuned in.

“I intend to note that the IOC denied the request,” Costas told The Hollywood Reporter. “Many people find that denial more than puzzling but insensitive. Here’s a minute of silence right now.”

The IOC released this statement regarding its decision not to honor Israel’s request:

“The IOC has officially paid tribute to the memory of the athletes on several occasions”

Costas said he was very confused by the IOC’s decision, and plans to call out the organization for failing to acknowledge the anniversary.

Good evening. You obviously have no knowledge of Jewish history. Also, your anti-semitic bias is shameful. Your faulty argument is so laughably shallow,

  • justice pursue

We need more moral people like Bob Costas. The IOC lacks morality or spine. The murder of Israeli athletes at the Olympics constitutes an attack on the supposed ideals of the Olympics.

  • NC

Wow 360man – So innocent IRSRAELI athletes were murdered and you try to rant about something totally irrelevant?

How about when the U.S. (where I’m from) went to Iraq on a lie?  Even if you don’t want to acknowledge that – there are plenty of other instances for EVERY COUNTRY in the world to be ashamed….even your “non-legitimate” ones.

  • Rodrigothecid

Way to go BOB COSTAS! He may actually have some BALLS! We’ll see if he has the spine to take a  stand & follow thru with his 1 minute of silence! …but I don’t know? …I’ve got a feeling he won’t! We’ll see!

  • Israel Forever

You’re clearly ignorant and misinformed. That alleged “aid” ship had terrorists on board who bated the Israelis by not allowing the legal security inspection that every other ship goes through. They were waiting for the Israeli soldiers whom they knew would have to board, and the terrorists viciously attacked the soldiers with knives and clubs. Unfortunately, the Israelis were armed with non-lethal crowd-control gear and ammunition which resulted in some serious injuries before they were able to get control of the situation.

Since Israel unilaterally withdrew from Gaza, and Hamas, a terrorist organization, was voted into power by the Gazans, they have fired over 10,000 rockets into Israel. No other country in the world would allow this to continue without vaporizing the offending party. Furthermore, prior to the 6-Day War, there were no Palestinian states in either Gaza or the West Bank. Gaza was part of Egypt that Israel won in the war, and the West Bank was occupied by Jordan before Israel won the war. As part of the peace treaties that they all signed, Gaza became part of Israel, and so did the West Bank. Any questions?

    “legal security inspection”

    Legal? According to what law?

“Since Israel unilaterally withdrew from Gaza, and Hamas….”

You don’t seem to understand contradictions. If they are stopping travel there they have not “left” in any real sense.

The rockets have been fired primarily as a reaction to Israel’s actions. For instance, they broke the cease fire and entered Gaza before there were problems and CAUSED the problem.

Imagine Mexico invading the US and kidnapping and killing Americans. That is what Israel did to Gaza.

Get over it already ! First: may the slain athletes and coaches rest in peace. Second: This agenda of controlled silence on the world stage seems like another Holocaust Industry PR scam to jam Israeli suffering down everyone’s throat. There has been unthinkable suffering to those in GAZA by the murdering IDF, should we have a moment of silence for them too ? At the 2016 Olympic games are we suppose to have more silence for the slain athletes in Munich ? GET OVER IT, live in the present or you will never evolve beyond your cave dwelling state of mind.

  • Marc Kivel

Scalexander, you need to do some research on the modern Olympics movement: one of the purposes of the games is to offer different nations a chance to compete against one another without resort to violence…God forbid there should ever be another incident like the one in Munich involving other nations I would expect the IOC to remember it on significant anniversaries too.  Some folks prefer to forget before they even have learned the relevant lessons…
