Bob Costas: The Willis Reed Of Our Time

Bob Costas returns to Fortress of Solitude tonight when the Winter Olympics are aired in primetime on NBC. Remember, Costas had to sit out the last six days of broadcasting due to his eyes becoming gateways to the fiery pit of hell. Matt Lauer and Meredith Viera took over hosting duties, marking the first time that anyone other than Costas had anchored NBC’s Olympic coverage since 1988.

But just because Costas has returned doesn’t mean we’ve seen the last of ol’ pink eyes. According to Costas himself, he’s not 100 percent — however, with less than a week left in the Olympics, there isn’t time to spare (via Today.com):

“I’m not 100 percent, that’s for sure, but if I waited until I was 100 percent, the Olympics would be over,” he said. “So if the audience can put up with still a little bit of red eyes hiding behind the glasses, then I can put up with it for the next week, too.”

Like Willis Reed, the heart of the 1970s Knicks, hobbling out onto the court for Game 7 of the NBA Finals, Costas will tough it out. He’s putting the team on his back. He’s certainly the Reed of our time — or, at least, of this particular moment, in his particular profession.

There are already photos of Costas back in the studio, courtesy of the NBC Sports PR Twitter account:

He appears to still be rocking hipster frames. We can’t wait to see how he looks tonight, even though he’s no Johnny Weir.

  • Leland Williams Jr,

Costas just another NY lib masquerading as an allamerican guy. Not even close to Reed.

Better yet keep the crew they have now there doing a hell of a lot better than Costas can do. Nice to see a fresh group do the Olympics.Really is time for bleeding heart liberal Costas to GO.
