If You Don’t Like Gruesome Bullfighting Injuries, Don’t Watch This Video

Do you have any interest in bullfighting, or running with the bulls, or riding bulls? If “yes,” that would make you different from us. Perhaps you have good reasons – or at least reasons that make perfect sense to you – explaining why you have an interest in doing these things. Maybe you get a rush from doing these things that nothing else can provide. Maybe it’s the only activity that really, truly makes you feel alive. Maybe, in its own way, these things make you feel at one with other creatures and the natural order (that way being: something else is trying to hurt you very badly, and you are in a constant fight for survival).

Well, hey, when we put it like that, we almost get a little interested in trying this stuff. There’s a certain primal appeal there. And then, we watch videos like this:

… and are reminded why we’ve left so many of our most primal urges behind. For the record, the matador who suffered those injuries, Fernando Cruz, is in stable condition, though from the sound of it, “stable” doesn’t mean “good,” exactly:

“His condition is stable. He had a very troubled night despite the sedatives, all due to the magnitude of the mishap. And it’s still too soon to guess what’s going to happen in the coming hours,” Dr. Maximo Garcia Padros said.

[...]

Cruz’s convalescence “will be lengthy, at least a month, and that’s if all goes well. He will have to spend the first 10 days in the hospital, since his injuries are great. And then he will go home to finish his recovery. But nothing is certain, and to make forecasts we have to wait at least another day or two,” Garcia Padros said.

Well, we can’t say any of that shocks us, since… did you see the clip? (You know what? If you didn’t watch, maybe that’s for the best.) Hopefully Cruz is able to make a full recovery – which, given the severity of that goring, would be kind of amazing. And if he does make that recovery, we have to wonder: will he ever want to step in the ring again? We know our answer – but clearly the desire to get up close and personal with a charging bull int he frst place requires a different kind of mind from ours.

Good for the bull. Bullfighting is an inhumane and a grotesque “sport” on par with cockfighting. Dance around tormenting a bull while stabbing him with razor sharp spears before finally finishing him off. How is that not considered animal abuse??
