WNBA Star Cappie Pondexter Apologizes For Insensitive Tweets About Japanese Earthquake
In light of the horrific events happening in Japan over the last few days, people around the world banded together in support of the nation. People raised awareness, raised money for relief efforts, and generally showed concern for an area afflicted by the worst of indifferent nature. And then, there was star New York Liberty guard Cappie Pondexter.
Pondexter took to Twitter yesterday and said some things about the devastating earthquake/tsunami natural disaster that…well, here’s what she said:
“What if God was tired of the way they treated their own people in there own country! Idk guys he makes no mistakes.”
“u just never knw! They did pearl harbor so u can’t expect anything less.”
…At…least she…didn’t use any racially derogatory terms?
Pondexter also used used the racially derogatory term “jap,” when referring to someone who was offended by her comments.
Ughhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh. To be fair, Pondexter later went back to her Twitter page and apologized (pretty much apologized, anyway):
I WANNA APOLOGIZE TO ANYONE I MAY HURT OR OFFENDED DURING THIS TRAGIC TIME. I DIDNT REALIZE THAT MY WORDS COULD BE INTERPRETED IN THE MANNER WHICH THEY WERE. PEOPLE THAT KNW ME WOULD TELL U 1ST HAND IM A VERY SPIRITUAL PERSON AND BELIEVE THAT EVERYTHING , EVEN DISASTERS HAPPEN 4 A REASON AND THAT GOD WILL SHOULDNT BE QUESTIONED BUT THIS IS A VERY SENSITIVE SUBJECT AT A VERY TRAGIC TIME AND I SHOULDNT EVEN HAVE GIVEN A REASON FOR THE CHOICE OF WORDS I USED. THE LEAST THING I WANTED WAS TO HURT OR OFFEND ANYONE SO AGAIN I TRULY APOLOGIZE. IF YOUVE LOST RESPECT FOR ME THATS TOTALLY FINE BUT PLEASE DONT LET ME OR MY WORDS LOSE THE RESPECT OF U THE WNBA AND WHAT IT STANDS FOR.
She at least faced up to it (and didn’t claim that, for example, her Twitter got hacked), as well as retweeted someone who had some pretty harsh things to say about her. But we’re still not sure of any other “manner” her words could have been “interpreted” than, “Wow, she sounds like she thinks Japan had it coming.” Needless to say, it’s pretty easy to see how that might have offended many, many people, whether that’s what Pondexter intended to do or not.
Maybe she really will learn from this. Maybe she’ll be a model citizen from here on. It’s possible. But it’s going to be hard to forget remarks like these even if she does. She’s a phenomenal player, and it’s too bad she took the focus off that by saying some pretty terrible things. Cappie, as a fellow Scarlet Knight, I’d love to be able to defend you, but…damn.
