WWE’s C.M. Punk Hits A Fan During Monday Night Raw (Video)

During last night’s episode of Monday Night Raw, WWE superstar C.M. Punk — one of the promotion’s more popular wrestlers — was doing a segment with Vince McMahon that involved him standing, unprotected, in the middle of the crowd. Wrestlers do this from time to time: venture into the sweaty masses to hit each other with ladders, throw each other through tables, or, in this case, look panicked as their boss’s ‘roided visage rains down threats from the middle of the ring.

Something went wrong during this particular segment, though. As McMahon addressed Punk, he appeared to turn around and clock a fan in the face. Since Punk has a history of “worked shoots” (interviews that are made to look like an unplanned break with character, but are actually part of the show), most fans initially thought this was something fake, made to look real.

Now, it’s not as clear. YouTube video would later emerge showing Punk being abused by the fans as McMahon delivered his speech, something which wasn’t as apparent during the TV broadcast. As an increasingly annoyed Punk is shoved (and shoved hard) by an increasingly unruly group of people, a man (who doesn’t look like he was part of the initial shoving) caught the brunt of it.

Here’s how it looked on TV. It happens very quickly at the beginning of the video…

And here’s how it looked from the stands:

The fan in question has filed a police report, which is further evidence that this wasn’t part of the show (or further evidence that the WWE will go to the greatest of lengths to make you think that this wasn’t part of the show).

In any event, assuming C.M. Punk really did hit a fan in the face, and the fan didn’t know he was about to be hit in the face: where was security? As Deadspin’s Tim Burke notes, the WWE didn’t do the best job in the world of securing the area around Punk, and having one of their wrestlers venture into a (possibly drunk) crowd is a good recipe for said wrestlers to break character… and someone’s nose.

I worked hard to be born with a superior IQ. I chose parental units with just the right genetic material so I could excel at activities requiring mental acuity of the highest order . Thus, I did NOT connect my earphones to listen to this clip lest I lose valuable IQ points by doing so. That said, anyone who goes to a WWE show deserves what he or she gets.

The fan instigated it with intentions of getting hit…lawsuit will get thrown out ’cause CM Punk got “assaulted” (legal term) by the fan more than once before CM Punk retaliated. That fan had no right to shove and hit CM Punk in the head before Punk decked the punk. The amateur video proves it was self-defense from an antagonizing fan.

So Einstein why are you commenting on the WWE

The fan punk hit WAS NOT the one that pushed him though, that is the issue. There’s a guy in a white shirt behind the guy that was hit who pushed the back of punk’s head

I was using VERY SUBTLE humor with the foreknowledge that some people wouldn’t get it. Right again.

Looks like CM was getting pushed all over the place and indeed was also shoved by the fan in question. So I believe CM was defending himself in hostile territory and was in his full right to re-act the way he did. A fan that puts his hands on an entertainer deserves the same treatment by the entertainer!

Oh wow, after viewing a few times, I now can see the fan in the white shirt bump CM’s head! CM did attack the wrong guy!! Right before CM defends himself, look slightly to the left and you can see that it wasn’t the fan CM thought it was. Damn!

How can CM Punk not be suspended or at least fined for hitting an innocent man?

  • Eric

State law states under file/647D01D8192ABDC6&smaller# that a person cannot legally hit someone unless provoked.

Poor fat guy in black shirt should get revenge on fatter guy in grey shirt for framing him.

Yeah, the guy that got hit wasn’t the instigator, unfortunately.

He shouldn’t have reacted the way he did, but he was getting pushed around quite a bit. Probably got fed up.

  • Anonymous

It’s the WWE’s fault for not securing the area around him.

  • Alan

The fan that got hit is now traumatized! Legal actions against CM PUNK and the WWE are being discussed. CM PUNK will have to get court ordered anger management counseling to avoid being arrested and going to jail.

Look at the video again right when that guy goes to put on his sunglasses he forearm CM Punk in the back of the head. Before that he was getting bounced around like popcorn. People were taking cheap shots at him. It kinda looks like he meant to do it to me
