Cristiano Ronaldo Is REALLY Upset About Losing At The World Cup
You’ve seen Cristiano Ronaldo not really spit at a cameraman in the moments following Portugal’s 1-0 World Cup loss to Spain, but what were the star’s true feelings about the disappointing exit? He let the BBC know, and…wow.
According to The Guardian, Ronaldo explained his disappointing tournament (one goal in four games, non-factor in the Spain loss) thusly:
“I feel a broken man, completely disconsolate, frustrated and an unimaginable sadness.”
That was probably more than the BBC bargained for. He also denied criticizing coach Carlos Queiroz, saying that when he requested inquiring reporters ask Queiroz why Portugal lost, he simply meant that his coach “was holding a press conference” at the time and was therefore in a better position to explain. And that’s when he offered up another great line:
“I was not in a position to explain what was what. I am a human being and like any human being I suffer and I have the right to suffer alone.”
There is no word on whether he shook his fist violently at the heavens while saying this.
Brian Phillips at Yahoo! lauded (the entertainment value of) what he termed Ronaldo’s “existential despair,” but whether Ronaldo was that hurt or whether he was trying that hard to placate his nation’s fans, such strong language is a vivid reminder of what the World Cup means in so much of the world.
Still, though, we expect Ronaldo will be just fine – young, handsome and supremely talented is a difficult combination to beat. We don’t doubt he’s upset, but there’s nothing a few shirtless trips out in public won’t cure.
