Outrage! David Ferrer Hits Tennis Ball At Crying Baby

Spanish tennis player David Ferrer hit a tennis ball at a crying baby during his quarterfinal match at the Sony Ericsson Open on Wednesday, and, understandably, people are peeved.

Ferrer was preparing to serve in the second set when the child started crying loudly. He decided to play through the distraction, and ended up losing the point. In a moment of frustration, he hit a ball towards the source of the noise (which, again, was baby). The ball came nowhere near the child.

Now, hitting a ball at a crying baby won’t make you the most sympathetic of figures. Ferrer was a foreign player, playing an American, in America, and hit a tennis ball at an American baby. Yes, he was booed loudly.

But as Yahoo! notes, bringing a baby to a tennis match, a setting where silence is key, was probably not the best idea. Just saying.

Ferrer should be glad that anyone goes to tennis tournaments, baby in-tow or not. He should kiss that baby since it might be the only fan of the sport in 15 years.

Screw you, Chris, and that comes from a rabid tennis fan. When you have a baby, stay the H home, you made that choice. Don’t ruin it for others in movie theatres, restaurants, and yes, tennis matches, with their noise.

What he did was wrong. Any reasonable person would agree with that. But no intelligent reasonable person should take a baby (who is always subject to crying) to a tennis tournment no more than you would take a baby to a golf tournament. There is very few sounds more annoying than a crying baby. He better be glad he didn’t hit the baby. That could get you 20 years in this country.

@crazy, I’ve been going to tennis tournaments all my life and you’re correct, bringing a baby is a knucklehead thing to do. However, you can’t argue the waning popularity of the sport in the US. Once this round of stars retires (Federer, Roddick, Nadal “hello my knees”) where will the sport end up? The majors make less a ripple every year… believe me, tennis needs these babies to become fans.

Does anyone know the names of the play-by-play announcers from the match?

  • hahahah

    People still play tennis?

  • I love tennis

Are you all bored and need to charge against someone? All this absolutely hysterical! He DIDN’T throw the ball to hit the baby, that was more a desperated movement, a wrong action, due to his loose of concentration -BECAUSE of the baby’s crying, BTW-, but too far from “throwing the ball to the kid”! Pleease!
And anyway, the only stupid here is the baby’s father, who shouldnt have go to a tennis court with the baby. Shame on him.

seriously, aside from the David Ferrer’s incident, what is wrong with people bringing their babies and todlers to places where people paid their hard earned money to watch a sport events, movies, restaurants. Is it not why we are out of the house to enjoy a moment of entertainment? Please, people stop being selfish, we are not your extended nannies or family members. Keep your personal life at home.

I was actually at the tournament and heard that same annoying baby crying at Sam Querry’s match and a few other matches. . . I was thinking that the parents would eventually get the message that it’s inappropriate to bring an infant to tennis matches but apparently they didn’t. . Sam actually had to stop playing and ask for the baby to be removed—which, perhaps, would have been the more appropriate thing for David to have done . . . . . .BTW, he did not hit the ball ‘at’ the baby with the intention of hitting it but lobbed it in the general vicinity—-an act of frustration, only to send a message to the parrents. . . I’ve met David a few times and he’s one of the nicest guys on the tour; is always polite to fans; and is a quality individual. . . To all parents of infants, please know that it’s inappropriate to take them to a professional tennis match. . . A crying baby is the equivalent to an adult screaming out in the middle of a point. . . Either stay at home and watch it on TV or get a babysitter. . . That’s one of the worthwhile sacrifices you make when you decide to become a parent. .

Had the baby been advised on proper tennis match etiquette, this could have been avoided. Check out this link:
