Denmark Concedes Own Goal; Loses 2-0

There isn’t a much more tragic way to concede a goal than the way Simon Poulsen and Denmark did this morning against the Netherlands in Group E’s first group stage match.

Own goal.

Trying to clear a cross from Robin Van Persie in the 46th minute, Poulsen mishit the ball with his head, sending it backwards off the back of teammate Daniel Agger, off the inside of the post, and into the bottom-left corner of the goal. The blunder gave the Netherlands a 1-0 lead.

The Dutch sealed their victory in the 85th minute when Dirk Kuyt poked in a rebound to make the score 2-0.

Here’s a video of Poulsen’s unfortunate clearance:

Poulsen did, however, find some redemption in the 87th minute, when he saved a sure goal with a bicycle-style clearance off the goal line.

There is but one adjective needed to describe an own goal, no matter how unlucky: shameful.
