Don Cherry Referred To The Metric System As “Commie Stuff”

The always colorful Canadian commentator (alliteration!) Don Cherry was back at it last night, folks. Following Game 5 of the Stanley Cup Finals, which the New Jersey Devils won 2-1, Cherry demonstrated his North American patriotism in refusing to succumb to the repulsive metric system.

When his co-host, Ron MacLean, noted the Los Angeles Kings had “120,000 kilometers traveled this year,” Cherry stumbled to respond, only mustering this blabber: “How many is that in real miles?” You know, since kilometers are fake miles. MacLean indulged Cherry’s mathematical deficiencies, informing him of the conversion to 73,500 miles. And then Cherry prattled off this gem:

“Don’t give me that commie stuff.”

Here’s the video:

Yes, “commie stuff,” because it’s not like Canada, or the rest of the world, for that matter, uses the metric system or anything. Our friends over at Puck Daddy inform us Americans that Canada “never fully metricated,” so it looks like Cherry remains fully entrenched with the opposition on this important and divisive issue clearly driving the political machine.

The best part of this whole thing is MacLean’s reaction, well captured by @seanallin99, as seen above. It seems to be some sort of combination of horror and disbelief, understandably so. This was live television, after all.
