Drake Compares Himself To NBA Player, Doesn’t Know What He’s Talking About
Drake has a new album, Take Care, that’s both selling a whole lot of copies and garnering critical praise. Yes, everything’s coming up Drake at the moment…mostly. He does have a few detractors…like rapper Ludacris, who lobbed a thinly-veiled shot Drake’s way on this track.
And this did not escape Drake’s attention – he addressed the hater topic in talking to Rolling Stone, and came up with an NBA analogy to explain the way he approaches criticism. The problem: the analogy seemed…off. Here’s what he said:
“I would liken myself to [NBA star] Kevin Durant just based off the fact I think Kevin Durant is somebody who people want him so bad to fall or mess up, but he just consistently delivers. Every night and all these games he’s playing now, even with the lockout, he just consistently delivers the same highlights, the same amount of points.”
Our problem with this: everyone loves Kevin Durant! Remember when he played flag football with those bros? People ate that up! A former coach named his child after him! And remember summer 2010, when Durant was held up as the anti-LeBron, the embodiment of everything good, to the point that we thought it wasn’t fair and others begged everyone to stop deifying him already? That’s the guy everyone wants to see mess up?
It’s just too bad Drake didn’t choose LeBron James as his example of the person everyone wants to see fail instead. That one would have worked. Then again, the Kevin Durant-Drake comparison might actually be pretty accurate: they’ve both experienced a ton of success early in their careers, and judging by Drake’s album sales, he has the ability to appeal to a wide audience. Maybe he’s not quite as beloved as Durant, but the two aren’t totally different…just not in the ways Drake seems to think.
