During The Latest Stop On His “Screw Everyone” Tour, David Stern Trolled ESPN The Magazine

David Stern doesn’t care what you think. You knew this, but it’s never been more clear than it has in the last week or so. First there was him going on Jim Rome’s radio show and asking, “Have you stopped beating your wife yet?” when he didn’t like the host’s line of questioning. (Rome wasn’t terribly offended by that, since he knew Stern was just using the question to demonstrate what he – wrongly – thought was a loaded query from Rome, but then was offended when Stern suggested that Rome has used “cheap” tactics to build his name.)

And then, to a lesser extent, there was Stern’s interview with Mike Wilbon last night, during halftime of Game 3 of the NBA Finals. For the most part, Stern didn’t say much to rock the boat – some even called the interview flat-out boring. But David Stern is David Stern, so he managed to get a few shots in all the same – including one at the company that falls under the same corporate umbrella as the network on which the interview aired. The question that prompts this particular Stern response starts at the 2:34 mark below:

One: of course that happened during an “Is the lottery rigged?” discussion. Two: he doesn’t even say “ESPN the Magazine,” exactly. As best we can tell, his exact words:

“ESPN – that, uh, magazine, which is the bible of… something, unless you read Sports Illustrated…”

The best part is that if Stern were talking to an SI reporter, he’d have poked fun at SI instead (see the part where he told Rome he had to leave to talk to someone more important, Stephen A. Smith). The guy cannot resist tweaking everyone at every opportunity, and if it makes us (and others) wonder if he simply has too much power and has become insulated from any consequences to almost anything he could ever do… it doesn’t mean it can’t ever be amusing.
