If You Missed Felix Baumgartner’s 128,000-Foot Jump Earlier, Here It Is

After a series of false starts over the past week thanks to uncooperative weather, daredevil Felix Baumgartner finally completed the task he’d set out to do as part of the Red Bull Stratos mission: ascend to literally stratospheric heights (about 24 miles above the Earth’s), and jump to the surface. And thankfully, the jump – which, as you might imagine, posed some rather significant inherent danger – went off without a hitch, so Baumgartner was safe and no one felt guilty that they just contributed to a ravenous disaster-porn culture that allowed a stunt that led a man to his tragic death to happen, as we all eagerly lapped it up in real time.

That aside – this was amazing to watch. The jump went so well not only because Baumgartner made it down in one piece (and on his feet), but because he broke the sound barrier during his fall, as he’d hoped to – that’s right, a human went faster than the speed of sound. Baumgartner looked like a white blur in the moments after he initially jumped, to the point that some joked he looked like a cotton ball.
