Floyd Mayweather, Jr. Faces A Possible 34 Years In Jail
You may have missed it, but Floyd Mayweather, Jr. may be in deep, deep trouble. Last week, Mayweather allegedly threatened ex-girlfriend Josie Harris and stole her iPhone. And now things for him have gone from bad to worse.
According to a new criminal complaint filed Thursday, Mayweather took phones that belonged to Harris and her two children following their altercation. The new complaint tacked on two felony coercion and one felony robbery charge, “along with one misdemeanor domestic battery and three misdemeanor harassment charges.” Convictions on all eight of the charges Mayweather face could lead to 34 years in jail.
Keep in mind that some charges could be reduced – Mayweather’s lawyer claims that Harris simply lost the iPhone she claims was stolen – but four felony charges are serious business. Mayweather would be treated as a repeat offender due to a 2002 guilty plea on domestic violence charges, and is also alleged to have threatened his children during the altercation.
One important thing coming from this case is that its a indicator of how far boxing has fallen off the radar in recent years. Mayweather may be one of the most colorful and talented boxers in years, but Mike Tyson’s rape trial and conviction got wall-to-wall coverage from ESPN in 1991-1992 - a far cry from Mayweather being only the second biggest story on ESPN.com.
