Gay Games Organizer Caught Making Insensitive Remarks…About Gays

The 2014 Gay Games scheduled to be held in Cleveland have been mired in controversy since a lawsuit between stakeholders led to the Greater Cleveland Sports Commission taking over the management of the international competition expected to draw 50,000 competitors and fans to the Rock & Roll Capital of the World. And now the president of the GCSC is accused of making homophobic comments in documents revealed during the court proceedings this week in Cleveland.

Synergy Foundation, the group originally awarded the Games organization contract, is suing the city of Cleveland for its role in establishing the GCSC as the new organizer — and they’ve found commission president David Gilbert (no relation to the owner of the Cleveland Cavaliers) to be less-than-sensitive to gay issues, including a discussion of why Gibert would need to purchase a leather fetish outfit.

WOIO’s Catherine Bosley has the full story:

In Gilbert’s defense, the comments were made in private emails and he’s right — the Gay Games do feature Leather Pride events. But when your job is to be the public face of sports in Cleveland, you have to assume that someone’s watching your every word.

This is the type of thing that the Cleveland Synergy Foundation Board tried to warn people about.
