Spurs Coach Gregg Popovich: Analyst Kevin McHale “[Doesn't] Know What The Hell He’s Talking About”
San Antonio Spurs head coach Gregg Popovich isn’t exactly renowned for being friendly. (This beard he once grew all but has a sign hanging off of it reading, “STAY AWAY.”) Moreover, he’s never averse to letting people know exactly how he feels at any given moment. Four titles means Popovich can say what he wants, when he wants, and that’s what he does.
And so during his team’s surprising playoff-opening 101-98 loss to the Memphis Grizzlies, Popovich decided to have some fun at the expense of analyst/former Celtics star Kevin McHale. When sideline reporter Marc Fein asked Popovich if he agreed with McHale that his team’s defensive intensity picked up during the third quarter, he had this to say:
Really, this is one of Popovich’s more good-natured exchanges with a reporter (though we suppose that’s only because he’s joking around at the expense of a Hall of Fame player/former fellow coach in McHale), and we enjoyed it. Since his team lost, though, we can’t help but wonder if he’ll be in a less jocular mood for Game 2.
