Because ESPN Is Apparently Un-American, Nathan’s July 4th Hot Dog Eating Contest To Be Tape Delayed

When I think of July 4th, I think of a few things: Barbeque, America, fireworks, and the Nathan’s Hot Dog Eating Contest. While many people are split on the entertainment value of watching adults shove hot dogs into their mouths, I for one quite enjoy watching the hot dog eating contest. So it comes as no surprise I was very disappointed to learn that ESPN’s family of television networks will NOT be carrying a live feed of Joey Chestnut’s sixth consecutive win. Instead, both ESPN and ESPN 2 will be carrying Wimbledon.
You can watch the event live… on your computer, on ESPN 3. Yeah, like I want to watch Joey Chestnut, one of the great American hero’s—on America day no less—eat his way to glory on my crappy computer screen. I need HD dog-to-mouth picture. Really upset with ESPN with this one. The contest takes 10 minutes! You can’t cut away from tennis for 10 minutes? I don’t need to see the introductions for the eaters, just the 600 seconds of Joey Chestnut eating some freedom dogs. Because nothing says “America” like overweight, sweaty dudes upping their sodium intake 6,000% for a few shining moments.
