Jalen Rose: “The Bottom Line Is This: (Duke) Recruits A Certain Type Of Player”

Last week, ESPN aired a portion of its documentary on the Michigan University “Fab Five,” in which former Wolverine (and current ESPN analyst) Jalen Rose made some controversial comments about Duke University and its recruiting practices.

“For me, Duke was personal,” Rose said. “I hated Duke. And I hated everything I felt Duke stood for. Schools like Duke didn’t recruit players like me. I felt like they only recruited black players that were Uncle Toms.”

At the time, Rose made it clear that that’s what he felt as an seventeen-year-old. But how different is his perception of Duke now, 20 years removed from his days as a member of the Fab Five? He explained his comments, and how his current feelings about Duke, this morning on First Take. Watch the video below, courtesy of ESPN.

I’m a Duke fan, people take things they here way to far out of context – I mean that piece was when they were in freshman & sophomore years in college of course now days its different! but Duke, I think; does go after a certain type of player and that’s ok – they are a private school- really what does it matter- simmer down!!

I think its pretty racist by these Michigan guys. If the roles were reversed, Al Sharpton would be involved and people would lose there jobs. Its about graduating players and winning, both of which Duke exemplifies.

Hey, Jalen is right, Duke, probably does have a model they follow and chances are most of the ” 5″ did not fit, so what. Nothing wrong with this, and if we find fault with Duke, we can find fault in just about every positional selection process one can imagine. Duke can take who they want and it seems they have done a good job. I think graduation rate is good too and it is hard to argue with the teams success.

Vindication for Duke is fact that they did beat this group several times on the court and did not have to face the problems created by this group with money changing hands.

Call it what you may, I see it as just plain smart on Dukes part and jealousy on the “5″s part.

The bottom line is Duke did very well without Jalen Rose on their team. As if a team can’t recruit players they want. This isn’t 4th grade rec basketball where everyone gets to play on the team they want to be on… Oh wait, that doesn’t even happen in 4th grade!
