Jay Mariotti Case Not Pursued By L.A. District Attorney’s Office (UPDATE)
Hold your schadenfreude – the Beverly Hills Courier reported yesterday that the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office will not be pursuing their case against Fanhouse columnist/Around The Horn panelist Jay Mariotti any further. The case, of course, stemmed from Mariotti’s arrest last month on domestic disturbance charges, an arrest that delighted the vast majority of those at all familiar with Mariotti and/or his work.
UPDATE: We also contacted the District Attorney’s Office, who recently confirmed to us that they passed the case along to the City Attorney’s Office to handle as a misdemeanor (the D.A. office determined there was a lack of evidence to prosecute as a felony case). Indeed, when it comes to being tried for a felony, Mariotti is in the clear, but there’s a ways to go before this is totally done.
The rest of the original post is below.
It’s not over for Mariotti, however. The Courier also reported that the District Attorney’s Office is passing along the case to the L.A. City Attorney’s Office, where it could find new life.
We called the City Attorney’s Office in an attempt to verify the Courier’s report for ourselves, and they confirmed that they will be taking the case, but have not received the filings from the District Attorney’s Office yet. It’s an interesting turn for the Mariotti case, though there will likely be nothing forthcoming to match the intrigue/outcry surrounding the initial arrest, which was just unbelievable.
And we’re not what you would call legal experts, but we can’t imagine this case passing through one attorney’s office with no action taken is a bad thing for Mariotti. The City Attorney’s Office could always decide to pursue the matter further, but so far, yes, he’s in the clear. The public’s pitchforks must wait another day.
