There Are Fears That Jerry “The King” Lawler Has Brain Damage (UPDATE)

After suffering a heart attack during WWE’s “Monday Night Raw” earlier this week, longtime wrestling commentator Jerry “The King” Lawler has been slowly taken off sedation and has had his ventilator removed.

He remains in serious but stable condition at a Montreal hospital, and while he’s showing signs of improvement, there are worries that there may be brain damage.

His ex-wife, Stacy Carter, posted this update on her Facebook page.

“The docs are removing his ventilation and taking him out of sedation. He is responsive, which is great!!! It took a while to revive him last night so there’s the concern of brain damage. He had some tests done which will show how much if any damage there is due to the lack of oxygen to the brain. Unfortunately, the results won’t be in until the morning. I appreciate all the calls, texts, tweets and Facebook messages of support and I know Jerry will too.”

The 62-ear-old collapsed while calling a tag team match with Michael Cole, slumping over in his seat and shaking. According to a YouTube user who filmed the incident, Cole could be seen immediately motioning for help from the cameraman nearby.

After Lawler was taken backstage on a stretcher, a visibly shaken Cole had to update the TV audience on The King’s condition. Fast forward to the 1:12 mark.

Lawler had competed in a tag team match himself about 45 minutes before his heart attack.

If you watched wrestling growing up, The King is near and dear to your heart. Even though he often played the “heel” role on the broadcast team, cheering for the bad guy, his childlike glee at the sight of your favorite good guy getting power-bombed through a table was infectious enough for even your 10-year-old self to appreciate. Here’s to hoping the King comes back, better (and funnier) than ever.

UPDATE: The results of Lawler’s CT scan are in, and it’s good news. Lawler’s best friend and business partner, Joe Cooper, tells Memphis’ WMCTV that The King does not have brain damage as a result of his heart attack Monday night.
