Lawsuit: Jewish Hockey Player Was Told He Couldn’t Be Trusted “With The Money”

A Jewish hockey player drafted by the Anaheim Ducks is suing the team, claiming that he was subjected to anti-Semitic harassment while he played for one of their affiliates. Among the things he was (allegedly) told by coaches: he couldn’t be trusted with money, and that Jews only care about “money and who’s who.”

Jason Bailey, a 23-year-old who was drafted by the Ducks in 2005, is suing the organization, the Bakersfield Condors (the Ducks’ minor-league team he was a member of), and coaches Martin Raymond and Mark Pederson.

According to the complaint, Bailey endured “a barrage of anti-Semitic, offensive and degrading verbal attacks regarding his Jewish faith” from Raymond, head coach of the Condors.

In one instance, Bailer alleges that Raymond said “he never wanted his son to be raised Jewish or to wear a yarmulke.”

Officially, the lawsuit says that Bailey was the victim of religious discrimination, harassment based on religion, intentional infliction of emotional distress and retaliation, and that he l”ost income, benefits and suffered humiliation.” The “losing income” accusation comes as a result of Bailey believing that he didn’t get the same access to resources and playing time that other, non-Jewish, members of the team did.

Bailey has yet to play in an NHL game, and is currently playing right wing for the Binghamton Senators, an Ottawa Senators farm team.
