ESPNer To Jets Fans: “That Pretty Mexican In Tight Pants Who Got Harassed Was Your Quarterback”

Dan Le Batard, sportswriter, frequent contributor to ESPN’s “Pardon the Interruption,” and Miami radio host, made reference to the Ines Sainz controversy on his radio show earlier this week when he called Jets quarterback Mark Sanchez “the pretty Mexican in tight pants who got harassed.”

The Jets were accused of harassing and making inappropriate comments to Sainz, a reporter for Mexican station Azteca TV, when she came to do a piece on Sanchez during their Saturday practice. On Monday night they lost their opening game of the season to the Baltimore Ravens after an anemic performance from the Sanchez-led offense.

“That pretty Mexican in the tight pants who got harassed? That’s your quarterback!” Le Batard screamed during the intro for his Tuesday morning show (Sanchez is Mexican-American. Sainz, although she reports for a Mexican TV station, is a former Miss Spain).

Part of Le Batard’s shtick is that he gets faux-emotional over opera music as a way of mocking sports fans’ obsession with certain stories, and this isn’t the first time it got creepy. He once implored the city of Miami to “open your legs for the giant royal penis” after LeBron James signed with the Heat.

So yeah. Audio of the “pretty Mexican” rant (which begins at the 1:13 mark) is here:

    Dan? Creepy? Really?

What Le Batard is doing is making fun of all of you guys in the media. For you to think it’s creepy and all about the fans makes his point. You just don’t get it and because you don’t, he will continue to make a great living pointing out your silliness.

    Yes. Creepy. Extremely.

I understand Le Batard is making fun of the tendency towards overreaction by fans and media (of which he is both), and I like his stuff, both his column and his guest-hosting on PTI. But referring to Mark Sanchez as a “pretty Mexican in tight pants?” I can do without that.

“Pretty Mexican in the tight pants” was actually his reference to the Azteca TV reporter. She actually needs to go up a size for her pants to become “tight”. You called this “creepy”, but you miss that this is exactly what he is mocking, those who get creepily slavish in their devotion to sports. You hear him referencing his on air partner Stu, who is often the embodiment of this mentality, and Dan mocks him, and Jets fans, constantly in this way.

This Sanchez cat gets more run in the sports media than Obama does in the mainstream news media!
