Linda McMahon Will Happily Let You Focus On WWE, Then Crush You (Video)
Linda McMahon, wife of the WWE’s Vince McMahon and important player in the organization’s rise in the sports-entertainment scene, won the Republican primary for Connecticut’s U.S. Senate seat last night. Leading up to November, in addition to facing Democrat Richard Blumenthal, she’ll also face questions about her past in the WWE.
But according to McMahon herself, focusing on the WWE will play right into her hands:
“If my opponents want to talk about soap opera content instead of focusing on issues, I will win again in November.”
WWE, consider yourself burned. We can’t blame her for downplaying her WWE past – come on, it’s the WWE, what are people gonna do, not make fun of it? – but it’s a fine line she has to walk. After all, her bio on her official campaign site prominently touts her experience in building WWE, and her work there is, as this writeup says, “the reason she has the background and financial ability to run for office.” How much trash can she talk about the experience that’s made her what she is?
And while it’s natural opponents would put her WWE experience into focus and try to paint her as a joke because of it – and point out that any enterprise spawning this series can’t be all good – they have to realize she makes a point. The WWE won’t have much to do with the winning candidate’s duties in office. There are, as McMahon says, real issues to deal with.
This will be an interesting race to follow, in large part to see just how much WWE talk their is, and how much her opponent uses it as political ammo. CNN’s piece on McMahon downplaying her WWE experience, though, noted she’s trailing significantly in polls now. While a lot can change between now and November, she might be left wishing this competition were as easy to fix as the ones in her old job.
And now, for a video that will totally make you take Linda McMahon seriously (things get classy at the 2:30 mark).
