And While We’re Talking About Soccer, Let’s Mention Lionel Messi’s Oasis Tribute Band
Argentina’s Lionel Messi, generally recognized as the world’s finest footballer, has a well-known love of the band Oasis, but now he’s taking it another level: Messi and a mystery teammate are forming a tribute band in honor of the mid-’90s-2000s British rockers.
And not only that – Messi, who will apparently perform as lead guitarist Noel Gallagher, is set to actually take the band on a mysterious European tour:
He said: “Our disguise is based on how Oasis looked in the mid-90s. We have our wigs, clothes and glasses sorted.
“I also spent a lot of time getting the mannerisms right.”
Messi says his band will tour soon – and says he’s invited Noel to see them play.
He said: “We’ll visit the UK. If you’re at a pub or club where we are performing and see past our disguises there’ll be a decent prize in it for you.”
While Deadspin doesn’t think this move will do any favors for soccer in the U.S., let us go on record in thinking this is awesome/hilarious. Imagine, if you will, Tom Brady forming, say, an E Street Band cover band. That, to us, is a decent approximation of what Messi is doing here. The ides of the best player in the world doing something this goofy…well, we can’t help but love it, and hope more stars follow suit.
