McKayla Maroney Doesn’t Do Hugs, Does Do Public Apologies

McKayla Maroney is only a teenage girl, but she is a fierce competitor with a game face that could scare the crap out of a grown man. You can imagine the fighting spirit underneath that face took a big hit when she fell on her second attempt in the individual vault competition, winning only a silver medal.

So downtrodden was the icy-veined Maroney, she shunned Russian gold medalist Maria Paseka from a post-game hug like it was 1982 (h/t BuzzFeed):

But Maroney, ever the good sport, averted a second Cold War with some apologetic tweets.

Maroney leaves London with a silver in vault, golds in team all-around and Twitter.

Sportsmanship is important to her now that her handlers and endorsement hustlers have gone in to spin mode and reminded her that prissy little bitchy attitudes don’t market well. She forgot what to do? I don’t expect her to be giddy and smiling. I have been there and sort of know how she must have felt. However bad I may have felt in defeat, I always acknowledged my opponent, and never responded with “back off!” Doesn’t seem like all that much to remember to me.

Right; she did not know what to do.  She made it all the way to the Olympic games, competing in hundreds of competitions to get there, starting from when she was three, and she has never been in a position where she ever “lost” a competition and had to “congratulate” a competitor

How would anyone know how they would react in a situation if they’ve never been in it? We can only assume but we can never know for sure. I’m sick of society always assuming the worst of people. Media only shows us what they can get a story out of. Can we ever assume the worst of somebody we don’t even know? As a teenager and a human being, she’s going to make mistakes. It’s not up to us to make it any worse for her. I’m sure she is already aware of the consequences of her actions. Why twist the dagger when it’s already in there?

Not the person I would want my daughters to emulate.  Poor manners are poor manners and they are forever saved on video.

Lol. Yeah, she’s apologizing because she it was caught on camera. Poor manners and a rude attitude. No surprise that many Americans are defending her behavior.

little princes bitch……. silver medal should be taken away from her.  She has the attitude and personality of a giant smelly fart.

Paseka was is not a gold medalist. She won bronze on the vault and silver in the team final.

Forgive me, but when did she apologize?  It’s in the title of this article and it makes no mention of her apologizing.  Unless you count the explanatory tweets, but those are clearly very unapologetic.  I have yet to see any article any where in which she apologizes.

Sportsmanship is THE one thing an athelete should show no matter where they end up in the game. That shun just proved to the world she didn’t deserve a Gold Medal. And don’t think the judges did not see it. Shame on you Kayla. How rude. I know your mother raised you better than that.

  • Just some thoughts.

She made it all the way there and didn’t take home the gold in the event that she was the absolute favorite of–the event that everyone saw her a pull up a perfect on. She was a poor sport and she let her disappointment show. I’m sorry, but seeing all the bitches at my school in their adolescence do this and it’s fine for them…but suddenly, because it’s broadcast on worldwide television, it’s a problem. Right. Let’s fix the problems with our kids before we put judgment on others, more famed than the rest.
