“Can you catch a golf ball in a moving car?” the press release from Mercedes’ people read. “Not something you’ve probably ever asked yourself.” Well, at least they were up front about what an odd question that sounds like. Indeed, we’d never asked ourselves that, because… had anyone, anywhere on earth, ever asked themselves that?

Well, at least one person did. And as luck would have it, that person worked in Mercedes’ marketing department. The result of that person’s stroke inspiration – golfer Jake Shepherd hitting a tee shot which former Formula One driver David Coulthard then tries to chase down and catch (in a new Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG Roadster, of course) – is one of the odder promotional stunts we’ve seen. And yet… it’s also one of the more oddly compelling. The footage below is the real, Guinness-World-Record-verified deal, Mercedes assures us:
