Mexico Wins CONCACAF Gold Cup Over U.S. 4-2, And Here’s Video Of All Six Goals

Despite running out to an uncharacteristic 2-0 lead in the CONCACAF Gold Cup final match, the United States men’s national team fell to Mexico Saturday night 4-2 in front of 93,420 fans at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena.

The U.S. defense, strong throughout the tournament, collapsed after Landon Donovan‘s goal put the team up 2-0. Here’s the six goals, in order:

Mexico quickly answered six minutes later, with a wide-open Pablo Barrera knocking a shot past Tim Howard:

The 36th minute had Mexico finding the net again, this time off the boot of Andrés Guardado:

The United States defense never made it out of the locker room after the half, as evidenced by Pablo Barrera’s second strike five minutes into the 2nd period.

But it wasn’t until the 76th minute that the match was truly put out of reach when Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Giovani dos Santos took advantage of a total defensive meltdown and stuck the fork in the U.S. Gold Cup hopes (presented here in Spanish from Univision):

Mexico takes home not only the Copa Oro but a ticket to the 2013 Confederations Cup in Brazil, an important prelude in preparations for the 2014 World Cup and a tournament in which the United States had desperately hoped to compete.
