Oprah Is Milking This Lance Armstrong Interview For Every Damn Pair Of Eyeballs It Can Get
Oprah interviewed Lance Armstrong, and in the interview, he admitted to doping. You know this, even though it hasn’t aired yet, and because you already know this, Oprah is discussing the interview before it airs. And really, why shouldn’t she? It’s not like there was any suspense anyway: you knew Armstrong would admit to doping in this interview before it was confirmed. Hell, you already knew Lance Armstrong doped before this interview ever happened, and you’re still going to watch anyway.
And because you’re still going to watch, Oprah’s going to find out just how much you’ll watch. The interview won’t just be a one-off special – it’s going to air in two parts, Thursday and 9 p.m. and Friday at 9 p.m. (all, of course, on Oprah’s network, OWN).
We don’t see a downside to this, Oprah-wise. OWN, as you might have heard, has had some tough times in its short existence, but its situation is improving, and a much-hyped event like this Armstrong interview could be just the thing to propel it to new heights. Even if the second night doesn’t do nearly the ratings of the first, it’ll probably still pull in more than, say, Police Women of Cincinnati, which ran in that timeslot last Friday (no offense to Cincy’s finest).
Really, the only thing surprising to us is that there was ever a chance this wouldn’t be stretched out over two nights. Maybe Armstrong won’t get into specifics. Maybe it won’t be that interesting. But it’ll still get a whole lot more people talking than anything else OWN could have put on the air. The network isn’t out of the woods yet – surprises or no surprises, it needs all the viewers it can get. And speaking of surprises: Oprah’s still trying to play up the shock factor.
“I would say he did not come clean in the manner that I expected. It was surprising to me. I would say that for myself, my team, all of us in the room, we were mesmerised and riveted by some of his answers.”
We’ll see how many people remain riveted for two straight nights. In the meantime, watch Oprah talk about the upcoming interview below.
