Homerism At Its Finest: Boston Bruins Announcer Heckles Opposing Team, On TV
The Boston Bruins and Montreal Canadiens have a long-standing, intense rivalry (you know it’s for real when it has its own Wikipedia page), a rivalry that’s currently front and center on the NHL stage thanks to the teams’ first-round playoff matchup. The Canadiens jumped out to a surprising 2-0 lead in the series, so for last night’s critical Game 3, emotions ran especially hot…even for the announcers.
Late in the third period last night, the Canadiens’ Roman Hamrlik (who had some semi-fighting words when he explained his team’s series lead by saying they “wanted to win more”) got tangled up with a Bruins player while trying to steal the puck away. But then, he appeared to, shall we say, exaggerate the impact of this min-tussle…and Bruins announcer Jack Edwards was there to call him out on it (at the 15-second mark, specifically).
You might chide Edwards for a lack of professionalism here. You might tell him he really ought to be a bit more objective if he wants anyone to take him seriously, that he ought to stick to informing the viewer and not let his emotions get the best of him. And if you watched the above clip and that’s what you thought, we say to you: stop hating fun, fun-hater. (Oh, and the Bruins won, 4-2.)
