Scottish Newspaper Names Ryan Giggs As Footballer Who Reportedly Had Affair With Welsh Model

Okay, in case the intersection of the English Premier League, tabloid sex stories, and media law isn’t your cup of tea (and why wouldn’t it be?), here’s the deal. Last month, a story semi-leaked that an EPL footballer supposedly had an affair with Imogen Thomas, a Welsh model. However, the story couldn’t fully leak, because British courts blocked the player’s name from being revealed.

This, however, didn’t stop news sources in other countries from revealing the name of the footballer in question (Manchester United’s Ryan Giggs), figuring that they, being based outside England, were on safe legal footing. But even though Giggs’ name has circulated far and wide in connection with this story, thanks to the court injunction, the UK press has been quiet. Until now. Via Sporting Intelligence:

That’s Scotland’s Sunday Herald, teasing a story about privacy laws run amok -which includes revealing Giggs by name – with a photo of Giggs that doesn’t leave much to the imagination. Here’s what the paper’s editor had to say on the decision to run the cover and story:

“The legal position is absolutely clear, we don’t publish in England and we are not covered by the superinjunction.”

He added that he was “absolutely confident” in the paper’s position, though he “absolutely did not take the decision lightly.” (Interestingly, the paper didn’t publish an image the cover on its website, nor the story in question, in order to shore up its legal standing.) The editorial accompanying the story and cover, though, says:

“Today we identify the footballer whose name has been linked to a court superinjunction by thousands of postings on Twitter. Why? Because we believe it is unsustainable that the law can be used to prevent newspapers from publishing information that readers can access on the internet at the click of a mouse.”

Indeed they can. And more interesting than the actual allegation of an affair is how this whole story made its way to the front lines of the debate over privacy laws as they relate to the British press. As Forbes noted today,it’s become such a hot-button issue that Giggs is now a bigger deal than he would have been without the injunction that kept his name “private.” This story could mark the moment the British court system realizes that if a story is even the slightest bit out in public (and wasn’t obtained through, say, phone hacking), you’re just not keeping it down.

    Oh dear Giggs!

Cheers to the Scottish paper, which is the new Sunday Herald as best as I can tell from the photo. Oddly, the name of the newspaper is also a secret in Britain, or so says the Guardian’s website.

  • fragma

Scottish Herald, well done.  The law is an ass.

  • Biaritzlounger

Ryan Giggs may have been seen as being a goodie two shoes however, let’s not forget he is a human being & a man. Name me a man who wouldn’t think twice when a slag puts it on a plate? Is no one else enraged by the ‘sweet innocent’ little show she’s putting on just to earn a bit of cash? I have no interest in football, nor the ‘modelling’ business she claims to be part of but only in fairness!

There goes the knighthood, that was what he thought he was buying by paying his briefs stacks of money, he is no more or no less than a spoilt brat dragged up from the pits than most footballers, you can never, never make a silk purse from a sou ears, he proves it.

I guess the term Streisand Effect isnt well understood in UK.

And its funny as all hell because it reminds me Eugene Robinson getting an award for his moral fibre and character and other crap like that right before the Super Bowl and then he goes out and get busted asking an undercover cop for oral sex.
Giggs whole reputation is about what kind of man he is as much as his talents on the field.
He was going to use that reputation to get himself one of those stupid Sir titles
and that is now gone out of the window when he was found to have banged some broad for 7months (you cant even blame it on a momentary loss of reason)

When guys like Rooney, Cole and Crouch cheat its not a surprise but its these do-gooders, holier than thou types do it that people really enjoy it.

Hence, if Dennis Rodman gets busted banging some bimbo, no one cares but if some bible thumper does it, it gets extra mileage…

Remember next time some tells you that this person is of strong moral character that there is a good chance that they could be a poodle humper as well.

Thank you The Sunday Herald. You guys were very brave to stand up and reveal the footballer who did this. Giggs and Thomas are both bad people. Giggs cheated on his wife, while Thomas lured him to her bed. Both should be punished. The Sunday Herald is truly a defender in free speech.

it’s incredible that the courts chose to stifle freedom of speech. why do these rich footballers or anyone rich need special injunctions ? if there’s one law for everyone super injunctions should be available for everyone. it’s baffling that the court ignores the fact that these overpaid stars owe it back to the public – their fame and wealth, and that it works both ways, if you are famous, be prepared for people talking both positives and negatives.

I find the attitude of the judge to be very immature. its not about twitter or technology. people would talk regardless!

I’m impressed with gigs. The lad did well.

  • Sofihay

It would have been yesterday’s news if he did not go to extreme lengths to cover up his affair and hide his identity. He behaved like a complete heel towards a young woman whith whom he had a six months affair. For that reason alone he deserves utmost condemnation.

There you go! And I thought it was Imogen having a Gigg! :)

its no big deal,  if he decides to be this stupid & thinks nothing will be publishd about him,  & that noone will find out his name if he takes out an injuction he is a fool. Well done for naming this ‘great bloke’ Sunday Herald

Some idiot above talking about “bible thumpers” and “these do-gooders, holier than thou types”. I wasn’t aware Ryan Giggs was either of these. Just because he isn’t constantly plastered over the front pages like a John Terry, then he must be a “goody goody”??? Maybe if people read less gutter press they’d have a broader view of the world around them, and not think you have to be one or the other. As for this woman involved, this “model” (she gets her fake t*ts out in cheap lads mags, so I suppose that qualifies her), she clearly sees it as her right to sleep with someone wealthy and famous, then go to the press and sell her story. More likely she sees it as integral to her career, as do others like her. Stop and think about that – sleeping with someone just to subsequently sell the story and make a load of cash. And we have the “right” to know about this? It’s in our interest? It’s none of our business and the sooner we realise that, the sooner people like Imogen Thomas will disappear

  • Paulscarff

the herald is not gutter press! If you read newspapers, you would have known that matey.

  • Paula 181

I think its not fair that celebrities can hide behind injunctions!! I think its fantastic that the scottish paper wrote the story and censored his eyes….hahaha! I think Imogen should have known better, hes a married man for god sake. I feel sorry for his wife and kids!!

‘Is no one else enraged by the ‘sweet innocent’ little show she’s putting on just to earn a bit of cash?’

    No!

That’s not quite the point, I don’t feel sorry for her but why should her name be dragged through the dirt and he gets away with it.

She isn’t the one that ‘leaked’ it and didn’t go to the papers initially.

Giggs should just man up and admit what he has done!

  • Jimbobojessy

I understood the footballer in question was Bobby Charlton..?

  • charmaine

hate cheats and i feel sorry for hes wife , but dont blame imogen , its not  all her fault it  takes 2,

If you kept it in your trousers like the rest of us have to – then you wouldn’t look such a Fool !!
    Oh…..and what a Fool you are !!!!
Hope your wife took it well – if I acted like that – it would be an immediate Divorce and quite rightly so.
If you don’t like being with the one you’re with, then it’s time to move on.

After all it was only fifty or sixty “single isolated lapses”!

  • Jenniplus2

A man should be strong enough to make the RIGHT choice and NOT cheat on his wife not to mention their poor kids! It takes two to tango…she’s a homewrecker and he’s a vow breaker, he’s not just let himself down, his family down and the fans he tricked into believing he was a “doting family man” when in fact he’s a rat just like Shrek Rooney.

  • Lou

see, you real men out there someone like Giggs[thats if it is him].will never know if the women in their lives really & truly love them just for who they are, not what they have got..meaning lots of money.status,fame..This is the positive side of being in for want of better words a low earner….you will always know the meaning of love.whereas they never will. sorry sad but true.

  • Dockerby

If the discredited footballer is Ryan Giggs he has been foolish in the extreme. As a footballer he is celebrated for his achievements in the game and achieved iconic status because of that, as a man he has let himself and his family down, if he applied the same disciplines he has adopted throughout his career he would not be in the mess he is in now. I dont think any less of Giggs as a person as we never know what the state of his marriage is, he always comes across a good guy. He has a lot of work now to rebuild his marriage and ultimately salvage his own reputation. The question must be what was he thinking, unless of course his marriage is in a mess, but that doesn’t excuse his behaviour, the persona he has cultivated over the years lies in shreds and goes some way to tarnishing his glittering career.

  • Dockerby

I dont think either of them are bad people, that is stretching it a bit far. Yes, people are getting hurt by the fallout of this, most notably Gigg’s family. Imogen is a single woman and can do what she wants where men are concerned, but, she should have known Giggs was off limits and so should’nt have approached him, The biggest aspect of this is that giggs looks foolish by trying to hide his infidelity and in doing so proves there is something to hide. It is a shame he has been so foolish because he is an ok guy on the face of it but fell foul of a woman’s charms and in that proving he is human. I think the sunday herald has acted spitefully by revealing gigg’s identity, this serves no purpose whatsoever and proves that their morals are lower than anyone else’s

  • Mccarbon13

    Good lad giggsy

  • Dockerby

I think it’s Tevez, that’s why he’s left the country. If a scottish newspaper publishes a picture of Ryan Giggs, does that mean it is Giggs. Where is the proof…? has Imogen said it is Giggs, NO ! so where does the Scottish herald feel justified in naming Giggs in this manner. At this moment it is speculation, nothing more and to try and discredit someone without proof is as immoral as any of this story. There are more important issues in the world.

  • Mr T

I am amazed she has little taste but having said that she put the work in why shouldn’t she be paid! I don’t feel sorry for any of them but Giggs has shown if proof were needed he couldn’t earn a living using his brains!
