Today In Breasts: Multiple Pairs Of Breasts Launch Breast-Related Assault On Euro 2012 Trophy

Wow, working in magazine publishing in Europe sounds like a real roller coaster — that is, if you also happen to moonlight as a feminist activist specializing in topless protest performance art. Earlier this month the trophy for the European football championship (or “Euro 2012″) was knocked over by several female protesters, including a reporter for Marie Claire, all without shirts and displaying anti-European messages painted on their torsos. This incident also gave rise to the greatest headline of all time — “Topless Protestor Attacks Euro 2012 Trophy Again.”

The Sun reports:

The woman, from campaign group Femen, tried to grab the two-foot silver cup in the Ukranian city of Dnipropetrovsk today.

It was a trademark demo for the group whose members regularly whip their tops off to protest against political injustice, social abuse and the exploitation of women in Ukraine.

They are currently targeting next month’s footie tournament, which Ukraine is co-hosting with Poland, because they say it will encourage sex tourism.

And video, which contains a brief nip slip before she’s pretty much tackled by security.

A worthy cause sure, but I took a bunch of women’s studies classes in college and I still can’t figure out how baring your breasts in public is supposed to make people focus on anything other than your boobs. At worst, you’re an object. At best, you’re a joke. Surely there has to be some other way to get the word out. Femen seems pretty content with their efforts, though, saying in a statement “[UEFA president Michel] Platini’s Euro chicken-roasting pan has been knocked down to earth together with the pedestal to which it was attached after the Femen attack in Kiev.” That may be true, but judging from the coverage there’s plenty of indignity left to go around.
