Usain Bolt Wants To Bring His Talents To Old Trafford

There are two ways to get a tryout with Manchester United, the most popular professional sports club in the world. One: You are a world-class footballer and you wind up miraculously in the right place at the right time. Two: You are a world-class sprinter and you happen to be boys with Sir Alex Ferguson. Try to figure out which road Usain Bolt is trying to take.

According to ESPN Soccernet, becoming only the second man in history to win back-to-back 100-meter gold was only a launching pad for Bolt’s other goal — playing for Manchester United. Then again, this could all just be Bolt’s unhealthy amount of swagger talking (who am I kidding, no amount of swagger is unhealthy for the world’s fastest man), not actually a serious request.

By the sound of his proposition (“I am in Britain for a few more days. If Alex Ferguson wants to give me a call he knows where I am.”) it seems more like he’s challenging SAF to an after-school brawl, rather than asking for a tryout with his professional soccer team.

Still, here are some other things Bolt said that might get Man U fans and Premiership followers jazzed:

“People think I am joking, but if Alex Ferguson called me up and said, ‘OK let’s do this, come and have a trial’, it would be impossible for me to say no,” Bolt is quoted as saying in the Sun.

“I would not take up the challenge if I didn’t think I was good enough. I am a very accomplished player and know I could make a difference.

“I would be the fastest player in the team – but I can play as well.”

There’s probably no one else in the world who can say, and I’m paraphrasing here, “Well, I’ve got some time to kill in London, maybe I’ll go try out for the most storied franchise in the EPL.” Good for you, Usain Bolt.

Of all the things Usain Bolt could use his fame to get — and it’s, like, 99 percent of the things — a tryout and eventual spot on the Man U roster doesn’t seem to be one of them. Still, it’s always fun to speculate.
