Vancouver Riot’s Kissing Couple Thought It Was A Good Idea At The Time

By now you’ve probably become acquainted with Scott Jones and Alex Thomas, the couple spotted kissing in perhaps the greatest photo from the post-Stanley-Cup-Finals riots in Vancouver last week. But if you’re not yet familiar, fear not: this morning, the couple appeared on The Today Show to get you all caught up on how the photo came to be. And even if you know of the photo already, chances are some details of it will surprise you.

Chief among those possible surprises: as much as the couple appears to be in the throes of passion, they really weren’t. In fact, they’d just gotten run over by riot police – which is an unsettling experience, believe it or not. So as much as the two appeared to be oblivious to their surroundings, instead using them as a surreal backdrop for a startlingly romantic moment…turns out they were just really scared.

Scared enough that Jones believed “the best thing to do” to calm his girlfriend down would be to kiss her. The rest is history. And for the record, they seem to agree that it’s a great photo: Thomas called it “a really beautiful shot.” Additionally, Jones said he wasn’t at the riot scene to make mischief – rather, he “just wanted to bear witness to what was going on.” He got a little more than he bargained for.
