WATCH: Louis Oosthuizen Romps To Open Championship Victory
No drama to this one: the final round of the 2010 Open Championship ended just how it started…with South Africa’s Louis Oosthuizen leading comfortably. To say Oosthuizen was under the radar before this tournament would be an understatement, but he was easily the best in the field at St. Andrews this week, recording a seven-stroke win over Englishman Lee Westwood.
Oosthuizen held the lead after every round but the first, and as other players faltered (ex. Rory McIlroy recording an 80 on Friday after his record-tying first-round 63), Oosthuizen kept up a pace no one could match, with four consecutive under-par rounds.
And he could have a lot more runs like this in him – he’s just 27, and according to his Wikipedia, will turn 28 on October 19, without question the best birthday out there. And speaking of birthdays, Oosthuizen’s triumph happened to fall on Nelson Mandela’s 92nd. Oosthuizen graciously thanked his most famous countryman for his contributions in his victory speech.
Oosthuizen’s triumph – and its stunning ease – seems especially improbable considering he missed the cut at both of this year’s prior majors, but as the saying goes, that’s why they play the game. This week, Lodewicus Theodorus Oosthuizen (indeed, as Stephanie Wei said, the best name in major-winning history) played it better than anyone else in the field by far. Video of his winning putt below.
