WATCH: Netherlands’ Nigel De Jong Lands Kick To Chest Of Spain’s Xabi Alonso (UPDATE)
In a scoreless first half of the World Cup final, it makes sense that the most controversial highlight from the early stages of the game will likely be something having nothing to do with a shot on goal.
UPDATE 2: One extra time period down, still 0-0. Still an offense-free affair.
UPDATE: Still a scoreless tie after regulation – we’re in extra time now. For a game short on great scoring chances, this is getting to be high drama.
The Netherlands and Spain are mired in a 0-0 tie, but the Netherlands’ Nigel De Jong at least provided a talking point when he (intentionally or not) landed a devastating kick to the chest of Spain’s Xabi Alonso.
Spain controlled the flow of the game with 62 percent time of possession, but the Netherlands got three shots on goal to the Spaniards’ one. Neither team, however, came particularly close to scoring, so De Jong’s kick – which didn’t garner a red card – will likely be the big takeaway.
Video of the kick below.
