A Rare Glimpse At The Rage Of Mariano Rivera
Yankees closer Mariano Rivera has been renowned his entire career for his cold-as-ice demeanor on the mound — which makes his outburst Wednesday night from the dugout all the more surprising.
The rage was prompted by a highly controversial call in which Royals DH Billy Butler was awarded a home run on a ball that appeared to bounce off the fence and back into the field of play. Umpires awarded the homer even after reviewing it on instant replay, which led to this:
Such emotion is rarely seen from Rivera, even when the pitcher blows a save in a big game — but for whatever reason, the (blown?) call drove him berserk and left coaches trying to restrain him on the bench.
