Mom And Dad Lose $60 Million Worth Of Tennis Legend's Money
A-Rod Would Like ALL Of His Rangers-Owed Money, Please
Do you desire an easy-to-jump-on A-Rod nugget? Here you go! It seems as though he’s worried the Texas Rangers’ bankruptcy proceedings could interfere with him receiving all the deferred money the team owes him – which, at $24.9 million, is a pretty penny.
So today, he, along with attorney Joe Wielebinski, filed an objection to the team’s bankruptcy auction out of what Wielebinski called “an abundance of caution due to the potential uncertainties in the plan.”
Now, you’re probably thinking, “What GREED! What a GREEDY CHOKER that A-Rod is!” And yes, it’s true that A-Rod already has more than enough money to live as lavishly as he pleases, but it’s also true that $24.9 million is still a lot of money. And surely the reaction if he didn’t pursue this would be, “How dumb can he possibly be, leaving all that money on the table?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!”
Also, there’s the fact that A-Rod isn’t the only person/entity filing a complaint. According to the article:
Major League Baseball, the Major League Baseball Players Association and the team’s lenders also objected to various parts of the plan.
There are also other players the Rangers owe money, though (obviously) none on an A-Rod scale:
Rodriguez isn’t the only player listed as a creditor. Current Rangers third baseman Michael Young is owed nearly $4 million.
Other former players among the list of creditors include Kevin Millwood ($12.9 million); Vicente Padilla ($1.7 million); Mickey Tettleton ($1.4 million); and Mark McLemore ($970,051.97).
Tettleton last played in 1997. When they say this money is deferred, they’re not kidding around. Side note: looking at Tettleton’s stats, he looks like a prototypical player who would have been undervalued pre-sabermetric-emergence due to a low bating average, even though he got on base a ton and hit for power. Then again, it looks like he made a pretty decent salary, so maybe he was properly rated.
Anyway: A-Rod. It’s easy (and tempting) to jump on him, but here, he’s just doing the smart thing. The Rangers are clearly in a state of upheaval, and it only makes sense for him to try and protect nearly 10% of his infamous Rangers contract. If you’re going to jump all over him for anything…make it this.
