Adam Dunn Sneaks Into Booth To Check On Bob Uecker, May Face Fine (Video)
Juuuust a bit mistimed.
Nationals outfielder Adam Dunn went to visit Brewers announcer Bob Uecker on Saturday, and while the gesture itself was very nice–Uecker underwent heart surgery three months ago and had returned to the booth just the night before–the problem was the timing of the visit.
The bottom of the second inning. In a game in which his Nationals were playing.
Now, Dunn wasn’t penciled into the lineup card, and, in his defense, he wasn’t likely to pinch hit until later in the game (Dunn tied the game in the 9th with a pinch-hit, bases-loaded sacrifice fly), but it is slightly telling of the nature of his behavior that Manager Jim Riggleman was unaware of the fact that Dunn had left the dugout until after the game.
But leave he did, and, as Nationals pitcher J.D. Martin proceeded to walk Brewers pitcher Manny Parra (performances like this one may be what prompted Dunn’s departure in the first place), Dunn’s voice appeared on the Brewers broadcast. The slugger himself wasn’t terribly funny, but his appearance did evoke some of the best from Uecker, who, as we know, is one of baseball’s best personalities.
The highlight of the interview came right before Dunn was about to leave, when Uecker asked ‘one of his all-time favorite guys’, “Are we gonna go fishin’ one time or not? You’ve been telling me for years you’re gonna go out fishin’ with me, and one of these days we gotta do it before you either hang ‘em up or I take a dixie.”
Dunn’s field trip will likely warrant some sort of disciplinary action, but the outfielder has already expressed that he is more than ready to accept his punishment. What matters to him is that he got to check in on the recovery of a friend.
“I could [not] care less if I get in trouble for going up and seeing my guy after he had heart surgery. I’ll pay my fine.”
Nice sentiment (although he probably could have waited to visit Uecker until after the game).
